I visited Jones the Grocer for a coffee Sunday morning and I can truly say I felt like it was my home away from home. I am pigeon-holing myself now, but before we moved from Sydney to do the expat trail, we lived just round the corner from the first Jones the Grocer. We would wander down for a latte and maybe sunday brunch, and it was always a treat. There are now ten stores in Australia, one in Auckland New Zealand, and now this one at Tanglin Village.
I love the long communal tables, and the space is big enough for children to spread out a bit, and buzzy enough that no one minds kids getting messy with their babychinos.
I didn't eat so I can't review the food, but the breakfasts people around me were having looked scrumptious-poached eggs from New Zealand with sourdough toast ($8.50), muesli with fresh fruit and organic yogurt ($9.50), hot chocolates and teas. My latte was the best I've had in Singapore, and for $3.50 I would make the trip back just for that shot of Aussie gold (Italian style).
Of course Jones is known in Australia for their custom -made cheese rooms which are temperature and humidity controlled to allow the cheeses to ripen at ideal conditions. They also have a wonderful range of quality produce, from grain fed Tasmanian lamb, to home-made ice cream.
There are some great looking hampers, Christmas Plum Puddings, chocolates, and my favourite, the rocky road. Buy it by the gram and it now comes in 3 varieties- white, dark and milk chocolate.
I would be intersted to read what others say about their Jones experience, as I have had some not-so positive feedback from friends about the service and also lunch. Has Jones Singapore got it right or are they still having teething problems?
I will return because I only have fond memories, but mostly because the coffee actually tasted like coffee and not luke warm milk.
Open from 9.30am daily
