It has been quite difficult finding great quality children's skin care products here in Singapore. When Maya was a baby in Sydney, there were plenty of beautiful organic and natural oils, talcs and creams to choose from. Actually, young babies need very little on their skin; and the purer the better, so organic should always be first choice if possible.

Conditions like eczema, cradle cap and nappy rash need some attention, but otherwise less is definitely more when it comes to new babies' skin care. I stayed away from petroleum based products for fear that the products would irritate my babies' sensitive skin, as skin problems definitely run in my family.

Saying that, I trained as a baby massage therapist in Sydney, and would massage Maya with pure Almond oil and Jojoba oil, with perhaps a drop of lavender added. No credit to my massaging skills, but Maya has always had lovely soft skin.

Ben is the one who has sensitive skin which is easily irritated by chemicals and was prone to eczema as a baby. I have recently discovered the Bumble Bees range of baby products, which are sold at Inspire Mum and Baby and EssentiaOrganics.

I have been using the Organic Baby Wash and the Organic Baby Lotion on Ben, even though he is now 5 years old. I love them both and so does Ben. I can use the The Organic Baby Wash to shampoo his hair too, which is usually an ordeal as he screams if he gets bubbles in his eyes. This product does not froth up too much but does a great job in washing his hair.

The Organic Baby Lotion is my favourite though. It is so light and gentle, and has a deliciously faint scent from the shea nut butter and the mandarin oil included. It is delicate enough to use on very small babies, but I think can be used for older children as well. I even sneak a bit for myself as I love the fragrance and the silky feel.

A lot of skin care products in the market today seem like they have plenty of natural and organic ingredients, but if you look more carefully, the proportion of these ingredients is very small. I always scrutinise the ingredients of skin care products, and the products in the Bumble Bees range use an impressive amount of certified organic ingredients. The Organic Baby Lotion, for instance, contains 5 certified organic ingredients; shea nut butter, sweet almond oil, macadamia nut oil, cocoa butter, and mandarin oil. So there is no concern that your baby is coming into contact with nasty chemicals.

If you want to try massaging your baby (something I heartily recommend), Bumble Bees also do an Organic Newborn Baby Oil which is unscented and contains certified organic oils of Jojoba, Sweet Almond and Rose Hip. This makes the oil rich in proteins, minerals and essential fatty acids and vitamins A and E. There's also a Organic Colic Tummy Oil, Organic Botty Butter, Organic Baby Chest Rub and lots of other delicious products for mum as well as baby.

The products aren't cheap, ranging from S$29.95 for 100g Organic Talc Baby Powder, to S$110 for 225ml Post Natal Lift Body Lotion. But you get what you pay for, and these are really beautiful products. Delivery in Singapore is a flat $5, so get together with your friends and neighbours and order together. They have a Christmas Super Pack available at the moment for S$108.
