Smiling Orchid cake
My good friend and neighbour Marisa had her daughter Ruby's 7th birthday at The Pit recently. Here is her account of the very exciting and muddy day (Thanks Marisa!):
If you’re looking for a unique location of a kid's birthday party; one which is fun, outdoors, and exciting for both boys and girls it’s The Pit! As long as you don’t mind the kids getting very muddy! We had our 7 yr old daughter’s birthday party there; all the children had an absolutely wild time.
Located at Turf City, it’s an army style obstacle course with a series of challenges set in a valley with natural creeks and ravines. It begins with 1 hour of team sport activities of your choice on the field and once all the kids have arrived they go down to the pit area for the 2nd hour . Here they climb over obstacles, under nets, through mud, slide down muddy banks and climb back up the other side. There are more challenging obstacles for older groups like a flying fox and a rope crossing.
The minimum age is 6 years but if you have a slightly younger child, parents can accompany him or her for some of the easier parts of the trek. The instructors leading the kids were fantastic. If you choose to have a drop off option, be prepared to wash down most of the kids yourself if they are 6 to 7yrs old. There are outdoor showers directly behind the party area.
Most people have pizza delivered for the ravenous kids, as the trek ends around 5 to 6pm. We had Ruby’s cake made to look like The Pit, from Smiling Orchid, and the kids loved it! Not to worry if it rains; they enjoy it all the more but if there is lightning they bring them in under cover. It usually subsides quickly and then they continue. Apparently they haven’t had to cancel a party yet! Book early as it has limited weekend time slots; ours was on a week night and my kids did not want to get up for school the next day. The parents that stayed enjoyed watching them have so much fun in the mud!
Party organizer’s check list:
- Sport shoes only, no crocs (remind parents too if they want to follow the kids and see what there up to, most of the parents wish they had worn sports shoes)
- A change of clothes and underwear!
- Mosquito repellent
- Body wash
- Table cloths. The Tables and chairs are rough and ready
- Plastic shopping bags for muddy clothes. Your guests may forget
- Extra towels
