We visited the Padang yesterday to catch some of the international teams playing Rugby 7s. I know very little about the game, but find it quite exciting to watch live, especially as some of the teams are from my home town (go Randwick!).
Last year it was free to the public, but I remember sweltering as we sat on uncomfortable aluminium benches. This year we were charged $20 per adult and $10 for Maya but we got to sit on a plastic bucket seat with a fan overhead. Well worth it!
The organisation was much better this year, with covered walkways and plenty of eating spots plus a bar in prime position. We had a great view and some of the matches were full of action. There were teams from Kenya, Indonesia, Japan, Fiji, New Zealand, Thailand, Scotland, The United Arab Emirates, and of course Australia, South Africa and Singapore.
We didn't stay until the end, but I read on the SCC International Rugby 7s Website that the SA Vipers defended their title to beat Davetalevu (Figi) 10-5. It was lots of fun, with the crowd really getting behind the teams and enjoying the skill and speed of the players.
Here are some pictures I took of Palmayra (Australia) and Singapore Cricket Club playing.
