There are so many things happening for families in Singapore now that the June school holidays are about to begin. The local school holidays are from Saturday 30 May - 28th June and during that time the National Family Celebrations (NFC) gives us many reasons to enjoy Singapore. The NFC is an annual campaign to celebrate the importance of family, run by the National Family Council and with support from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

To kick it off is the annual Family Day Out Carnival along the Singapore River at Raffles Landing Point near Boat Quay on Saturday 30th May. The Family Day Out encourages families to spend time together and enjoy some down time away from their busy schedules. Perhaps it is sad that we must be told to go and enjoy ourselves, but it is true that in these uncertain times it is the culture to work obsessively without finding time to enjoy the people who we do it all for.

There are many exciting programmes for children and adults at the National Museum as part of their Children's Season 2009. One that I would love to attend is the Dinosaurs in the Garden by Erth Visual & Physical (Australia). This interactive show takes you on a journey through the prehistoric Australian landscape and discover an amazing selection of ancient plants, dinosaurs and creatures that inhabited the landscape millions of years ago. The Singapore audience will be the first to interact with a new small herd of dinosaurs that will be making their international premiere in this show. Wow, sounds amazing.

There are also parenting workshops, museum tours, drumming workshops, theatre performances, storytelling, and craft activities for all ages. There will be activities organised by Safra, and other community groups around Singapore, including a guided tour from Henderson Waves to HortPark, led by experienced guides from HomeTeamNS.

If you show a copy of the NFC logo (either a print out or a cut out) you can enjoy some great discounts at many locations around Singapore. Some that my family want to visit include the Singapore Flyer, where for every two paying adults you can bring up to four children free, The Night Safari which has 50% off admission fee, and the Jurong Bird Park which has 50% discounted admission fee on Family Day Out only. You can see the full list of discounts available and download a copy of the logo here.

You can also win FREE tickets to various attractions by answering a simple question and submitting your answer. For details go to the NFC website here
